I think every law abiding citizen should be trained and carry a firearm at all times.

Unlike the typical liberal/progressive/socialist/communist that wants the state to regulate all behavior, I would be vehemently opposed to making that a requirement.

Gotta love some of the responses:

Well I live in Michigan and we have a requirement for all CPL holders to pass a six-week training course along with a background check to verify that they are eligible to carry concealed.
    THink he meant six-hour?

I wish the counties would offer free basic handgun defense courses for those applying for their LTCF. There are probably lots of people who want to take courses, but may have trouble putting together the money. From what I've seen, most courses cost several hundred dollars, plus ammo costs. No argument from me that people who decide to carry should receive adequate training, but from a poll I remember seeing on this board not long ago, most people who carry don't get formal training.

I get where your coming from, but nothing is free. Somehow it has to be paid for. Any ideas on how we go about that?

I can easily agree with you there, I don't know how it cost $46 for 10 minutes worth of the deputy's time and a plastic picture card. But we know their not going to turn over a dime of that for a gun safety course.

At one time I thought a safety course/proficiency test was a good idea to "qualify" for a LTCF. But as pointed out to me right here on this forum, having to qualify to exercise a right causes it not to be a right. It falls on the citizen to apply some personal responsibility and get themselves trained. Or at least seek out something like this very asset we have right here.
