I second that, especially the Buckmark. Probably have a few thousand rounds through its and no problems as of yet.

    Semi auto: Ruger MKIII
(Sig Mosquito is my second favorite.)
    SA revolver: Ruger Single Six

Find a good used one and spend the savings on ammo, targets etc.

Browning Buckmark all the way. I have an easy 1500 rounds through mine without a single issue. It is amazingly accurate and shoots great. I've only shot Ruger .22's (which are good guns too) but if you can find one, I think the Browning is the way to go.

I shot at the NJ State Pistol Championships on Friday (not well, but I was there). I took a walk up and down the line, looking at what guns were being used. There were twenty five shooters on my relay - half of them Master class shooters - most of the guns being used were/are way beyond the budget mentioned but looking gives one a sense of what serious shooters go to for accuracy.
    There was one Ruger Mk.II.
    There were no Brownings.
There were a number of S&W 41s. A High Standard Victor (Mine).
Those were the low end guns. All the rest were Hammerli 208s, 280s, and FWB 93s.
For a 200-250 plinker....either the Browning or the Ruger will suffice. My Ruger has an easy 10,000 rounds through it. It runs on just about anything.
Can one buy a Browning or a Ruger for $250? Not new, maybe used.

For your purposes, I say find a used Ruger or Browning. I know some folks that have had bad luck with their Walther P22s.

I love mine. It's not terribly accurate and not terribly reliable (unless you use high velocity ammo - in that case very reliable), but it's a fun gun to shoot. I'd say I get a hiccup every 5 to 10 magazines. I don't put a huge emphasis on reliability on a range only gun like this, so that's plenty acceptable to me.
