Default Thinking of a new wheelgun

Primarily thinking of a .44 mag, either Ruger or Smith & Wesson. So I was hoping that I could get some viable input from a very knowledgable group of wheelgunners. What do you think, Blackhawk, Super Blackhawk, some iteration of the venerable model 29? What would you do?

    Find a used S&W 29-2.

I am not a wheelgun expert but if I were in the market for a nice .44 mag this is the one I would get.

As you might be able to tell from some of my previous posts, I'm on a shiny gun kick right now.

    Bill,

Check out the Ruger Redhawk. I don't think you can find a 44 as strong. I have the 7 1/2 inch model in SS and put Hogue grips on it (the factory grips are too small for me).

That said, if you could come up with a Model 29 vintage 1960's to early 70's at a good price (that hasn't been abused) I wouldn't said you done bad. The earlier Smiths IMO were put together better. I owned one (made in 1965) which I later sold to get a 14" SS Contender in 7-30 Waters. I kinda regret selling it but the Ruger I got last year is awesome.

I'm with on this line of thought Bill. I wish I had the funds because I'd have a wheelgun by now.

At westie group shoot 6 I shot 27Hands 44 mag, can't remember who the manufacturer was, real nice gun not as much kick as I thought it would have.

At westie shoot 7 Frenchy let me shoot a 357 mag, and that too was a great gun, and again I don't remember much other than I enjoyed shoot both of them.

A wheel gun is next on my list for sure, followed by a rifle. It's a short list but is going to take a long time to fulfill.

    Good luck Bill,

    Bill

I had a Ruger Super Redhawk .44 mag with a 2x Leupold And hogue grips. I loved shooting it as did my wife. It uses a tranfer bar hammer system. They have 7 1/2as well as 9 1/2" barrels available. Real strong piece. Good luck in your search.

I have a S&W Model 629 (stainless version of the 29) and I really like it. I also have a Ruger .357 that I like, but not as much as I like S&W revolvers. S&W will cost more, but they hold (and increase) their value more. I can't argue against a Ruger, as they offer a lot of value for the money. But I've found that most S&W have better triggers.
