silencers?
Is a sound suppressor (silencer) illegal to use or possess in Pennsylvania? It would be cool to have one attached to a high powered rifle when hunting bear so you don't agitate any other bears which may be in the area by the sound of the gunshot. How would I build one or procure one?

Re: silencers?
Suppresors are legal in PA. They are Class III items. You have to pay the $200.00 tax to own one. You can make one, but, you still have to pay the tax.

Re: silencers?
Depending on the rifle and caliber, a suppressor isn't really going to help you if your goal is to not agitate the other animals. A suppressor will dampen or eliminate the muzzle blast, but the bullet will still have a supersonic crack which is noticeable and will echo.
You can use subsonic rounds in bolt action rifles, although I don't know what the effect is on killing power.

Explore the NFA section of this forum for some detailed info on this subject, your thread may end up getting moved over there.

freedomisnotfree......it costs $200.00
The sonic crack can be pretty loud when it's right next to your head. So don't miss the bear or he'll run away.
The rest will hear what amounts to a 22lr shot.

Re: silencers?
Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I'm pretty sure you can't hunt in PA with suppressed weapons....that may be outdated info (took the hunter safety course decades ago).

Re: silencers?
Best part is.
Nobody will know where the shot came from , even the bear.
Ive stood in front of a Suppressed 300 mag with both regular and subsonic rounds and when it was fired I had no idea where the noise came from.
