It happened around 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the 300 block of Chestnut Street in Royersford, Pa.
The boy, 4-year-old Michael DeSantis, was taken to Pottstown Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators say he suffered a single gunshot wound to the head. A weapon was recovered at the scene.
Sources say, at this early stage of the investigation, the shooting appears to be accidental. The bullet was either fired by Michael as he played with a loaded gun or by someone else using it nearby.
An autopsy will be performed on Thursday.
Neighbors say the boy was naturally curious, loved to fish with his family and his loss is being felt by everyone on his tight-night block.
"It's sad, to see a four year old go. It's ridiculous. They've got three other kids that are suffering because they lost their younger brother," said family friend Tyler Mohn.
Royersford Police and the Montgomery County District Attorney's office are investigating.
It's sad when people are irresponsible with their weapons.

Sad, sad, sad. I hate reading stories like this one. Odds are, it could have been easily prevented with a little responsibility.
My condolences to family and friends.

Truly tragic, and avoidable. This will probably lead on the 11 o'clock news.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Just sad. I wonder if the father is a fellow PAFOA that we might know well. Maybe someone can shed some light on so we can help the family out in any way we possibly can?

Most likely preventable. These kind of stories ruin your night, or week.

I know the mother, she used to work at Streamlight in my department. The husband is an EMT or something along those lines. It is really sad that this had to happen.
I agree with those that have said this could have been avoided.
