    Question Marlin 336

I have a 1974 marlin 336 in 30-30. I took the scope off and would like to fill the holes that are left in the receiver. I called Marlin and they sent me the dummy screws as they call them, except they are too small. they are the right length but they just kind of fall in to the holes and are too small to be threaded. What is the correct size? I figured Marlin themselves would have this right. Thanks

Sounds like the holes were retapped. You will most likely just have to get yourself a kit, or find one, and find the right size.

Take the scope mount screws with you to a good hardware store and match up some screws with the same threads. You may have to trim a screw down, which can be "fun" holding it without damaging the threads or your fingers.

Reason why you may be having this problem is, I dont think Marlin tapped the 336's for scopes until well into the 1980's or later.

The common size for those screws is #8-40; that's the common size for scope base screws. Marlin may have sent #6-40s by mistake; that is the screw size used on the side of the receiver for receiver sight bases.

You can get the correct screws from Brownells; just search "Plug Screws" on their site. However, for four plug screws installed it should not be more than $10 at a local 'smith. Shipping from Brownells will be almost that much alone.
