Painting a front sight-
My eyes are not what they used to be, to say the least. Couple this with a love of military weapons and their obligatory iron sights, and....well, you can see what I'm up against.
One of my older sporting rifles has a gold triangle painted on the back of the front sight which really seems to help focus. I've tried a couple of times to paint rear sights but am not getting anywhere fast.
Has anyone atempted this? I'm curious to know what type of paint, and what type of prep, was successful.
Thanks in advance for your help- POBLast edited by Plain Old Bill; August 5th, 2010 at 10:33 AM.

Re: Painting a front sight-
I've seen it done before, and used weapons that had it done to them. It certainly seems to help in certain conditions.. Also, depending on what kind of gun it is, you may be able to get a replacement front sight for it. They make them with a fluorescent orange block in the front. Again, depending on what kind of gun it is, there are many different sights out there. From the ones with the orange in them, to fiber optic sights, to night sights, to ones with just dots in each for alignment.
Do a search for your particular gun, and see if there's anything you like.III%

Quick easy cheap solution:
Rub your front sight/post with alcohol to get the dirt/grease/grim/oil off. Then go to the local drugstore or raid the wife's/girlfriend's cosmetic bag for a brite colored nail polish.
A dab of nail polish on the front sight is all it takes. . .

Re: Painting a front sight-
easiest solution for me was to use a tooth pick. I tried a very fine paint brush, but as you go to dab the paint in the sight hole, the brush spreads out and you end up painting some of your sight that's not meant to be painted.

Re: Painting a front sight-
I got a small bottle of white exterior enamel at a hobby shop and start by painting a base coat of white. If that's not sufficient, I put a top coat of brite sights over the white. Works wonders for tired eyes.

I won't comment on how well they work or not, but that doesn't matter if they don't actually send them. I ordered some a few months ago. A month and a half later, nothing. So I called, emailed. More nothing. Waited a little longer and finally filed a paypal claim. They issued a refund promptly then, but why not just send the damn dots?
Not a happy camper with those guys.
I use engine enamel. The high temp ceramic paint, usually white up front and red in back. It's oil resistant, so it's pretty solvent proof. Holds up really well. Like years and years.
