    Default Hunting Handgun Optics

So I have a Dan Wesson 44mag with an 8in barrel that I use for hunting whitetail. I have been using open sights but this season I would really prefer something with magnification. The problem is I know next to nothing about about optics.
I think I would prefer a red dot style scope due to faster/easier target acquisition, but I have heard that they cannot take the abuse that a hunting pistol deals out.
I'm looking to stay under $300. Any suggestions?

Red dot pistol scopes don't have any magnification (although I haven't looked at them recently, so they may be available now) so if that's what you're looking for you may want to look at conventional scopes. That being said, I have a Millet red dot on a .44mag that has held up very well. It was bought many years ago so I don't remember what I paid for it. I recently heard that Millet is now built over seas and reliability has suffered somewhat. I didn't bother to look into the truth of that statement though.

My red dot scope has never given me any problems, and I've never heard of anyone who had problems with one on a pistol.

I would suggest a company that has a specific line of handgun scopes. Pistols put a whole lot of acceleration on an optic, so they need to be rugged.

Burris has an entire line of scopes with magnification designed for use with pistols. You can also get them with an "Electro-Dot" that lights up the center dot of the reticle.
