I'm predicting 10 pages for this thread. Maybe a lot more.

I gotta give rep to the OP for this crazy story.

getting hassled by his superiors quite possibly.

given that the trooper, by that point, had already basically told the neighbor to go f' himself--that the OP was within his rights and the neighbor should leave him alone--i personally would have also not hesitated to show him my LTCF as i think doing so would make his job easier without injuring me in any way.

now, if he had *demanded*, rather than asked, to see my LTCF, that would have been different. if he had not already demonstrated a respect for--and even properly used his authority to protect--my rights, that would quite possibly also have been different.

but, in this case, i would have gladly helped make his day a little easier by showing him my LTCF.

Why do some of you get all wigged out about police requests? They're allowed to ask you just about anything they want to ask. The OP was free to present his LTCF or withhold it - note the "free" part, as in "freedom", as in I'll do what I want and you do what you want.

When police ask suspects to submit DNA evidence (without a warrant), are they "being dicks"?
well since you were clearly talking to me i'll answer you but first get your quotes right, I never said that the cop was being a dick. The cop was clearly fishing and came up empty. Why does the cop need to see something that, by law, an OCer doesn't have to have. The cop stated he knew that OCers don't need a ltcf on foot but he still asked for it. To what end? yes, do what you want and submit to random ID checks as long as they come with a smile.

as to your second question, no they are fishing.

Since when do they not have that duty? There was a serial rapist in Philly a few years ago. The cops were called to an apt where someone heard screaming. The cops went, banged on the door for awhile, no response, no sound from within, they had no right to enter so they left. Turns out, the rapist was in the apt. with the girl during this, and she was either already dead or still alive. Either way, the city was sued successfully for the police not carrying out their duty.

Basically, you've got a cop who goes out on a call, tells the red faced screaming complainant to go pound sand, and is probably thinking it would be nice to have all possible information about the encounter in case it comes back to haunt him. So he politely asked. No big deal.

Like I said, if the OP refused and then got hassled, that's a different story. But that didn't happen. Simply making the request is not a dick move, it's doing his job which is to gather as much info as possible regarding the call he was sent out on. It's not illegal for him to ask to see it. It's not even improper, as long as he didn't demand it.

not likely...given that there was nothing to fish for and the trooper had already stated that.

Why does the cop need to see something that, by law, an OCer doesn't have to have.
because he also has to follow departmental policy/SOPs.

    To what end?
    following standard procedure.

yes, do what you want and submit to random ID checks as long as they come with a smile.
    apples and oranges.

The Trooper went over to their house and schooled their asses because you were a stand-up guy and showed him your LTCF as well.

I am NOT saying you would not be a stand-up guy if you did not show LTCF. I am saying that made short work of the matter in this case and then the Trooper went over to those dipshits and threw their bullshit back at them in spades.

Maybe the cigars are affecting your short-term memory. I've conveniently quoted a selection of your posts in this thread below for your reference. The full text is also available if you scroll up.

Nope. This past weekend I was pouring cement in a front step, and my shirt rode way up. A nice Indian lady I'd never met before went by with a stroller and said a pleasant hello. That's about it.

    2) My neighbor needs an education. Do you think it'd be wise to go over there and talk with him about it?
I vote no. If you show up carrying, he'll tell the police you threatened his life. Sounds like a complete nut-job.

But thanks for the best laugh all day! "Gun! He has a gun, Gun, GUN! You pigs retarded or what, you can't see his GUN!? C'mon, arrest the crap out of him! Hit him with your stick!"

His request might count as a "lawful demand," since the statute doesn't say you only have to show it when you're carrying concealed or in a vehicle, so the OP did the smart thing by showing it.

Without asking for the LTCF, this would be the perfect encounter. But in this case I'd give the flatfoot a pass for asking: he straight-up told the OP that he was under no obligation to even have an LTCF. What pisses me off is when cops pass off requests as orders and otherwise trick you into acting against your own rights. Plus he gave the neighbor a followup talking to, which is worth bonus brownie points.
