Default Stevens S x S shotguns any good?

Hey guys, been noticing side by side shotguns by stevens popping up at my local gun shops for 199.99. They are the 311 model. Always really wanted a side by side but this price seems too good to be true. Are these shotguns any good or have a tendency to be crap? Any info helps.

A very serviceable - and bombproof - SXS. At least, that is the reputation. A bit heavy and clunky but they last and last.

The Stevens SxS 311 and similar models are all good guns.

I cant begin to count the number of boxes of shells I put through dad's Stevens 16ga growing up - and that thing still locks up tight.

the 311 is poorly made when compared to the 335, 235, and other early stevens guns made in the 20's and 30's. it is not as smooth as the older guns in function, and not as good in fit and finish. serviceable for killing things, but so is a 2X4.

Always seem to have had one around. Nothing fancy but all have been good honest guns. Wish that I could learn to shoot a double but too many years of single barrels.

They are NOT fancy by any measure...they are solid, reliable field guns and if you can find one for less than $250, jump on it...they used to be very inexpensive, but a lot of them were bought up by Cowboy Action shooters and the prices went up. They are build like a dump truck, and will take several lifetimes worth of use.

    But they ain't pretty.

The 311 is plain and solid. The 235 is nicely made but, will break if you open the gun with a jerk. I broke several 235's trying to use them for cowboy action. The 225 is much better for this type of abuse.

a damned shame you wasted them. they are fine field guns, and deserve more respect than that. i use a 335 for squirrels.
