Default I got a WONDERFUL surprise today!!

In case some of you don't know, I'm in the process of building a custom rifle and possibly some others in the future. I decided on the Remington 700 platform. I am friends with the gunsmith so he is waiving the charges on blueprinting the action as long as I learn how to do this work, so I can do my own in the future. So today I was shopping around all the gun stores in town for Remington 700's. There is a new Gander Mountain in town and I have never known them to have that great of prices but I haven't been in the new store so I wanted to check it out. I was looking at used guns in the store and all I saw were some fancy ones that were in pretty good shape. So I asked the guy if he had any in the back that they couldn't fit on the shelves or that were pretty beat up. I intend to just use the action off of the rifle because I will be refitting all of the custom rifles with new barrels and stocks. So the guy said they didn't have any in the back, but he could check some of the other stores and see what they had. Guess what they had and at what prices. They are transferring a Remington 700 BDL and 2 Remington 700 ADL's to the Gander mountain for me to inspect before I purchase them. They want $245 for the BDL and $229 for the ADL's. That's right, you read that right $245 and $229. I have NEVER seen any company sell those rifles for that cheap. He said that the other Gander Mountain said that they were actually in decent shape. I will tell you when they get here in a few days, but if you are interested in finding actions for custom rifles, you might check with these guys, they really gave me a pleasant surprise today. It might save you several hundred dollars that you could put towards the barrel, stock, or scope.

They very much are steals, that's why I definately had to get them and wanted to pass the idea on to other members to see if they'd have the same kind of luck. The BDL that I am buying is actually in 7mm magnum, but I will use the action to build a "tactical rifle" that will be chambered in .300 WSM (winchester short magnum). I thought about building it in .300 winmag and 7mm WSM, but I decided I wanted to give the .300 WSM a shot. I have read that it has a slight edge in consistency over the .300 winmag due to the primer being able to ignite more powder initially. I liked it over the 7mm WSM because there is obviously more choices in bullets and weights with the .30 caliber bullets, so I decided on the .300 WSM. The barrel will come from Krieger and will be fluted, #18 taper, which is basically remington's "heavy varminter" barrel, so it'll be a Sendero profile. I haven't quite decided on the stock, but I believe I have finally gotten away from the McMillan. I have been favoring a stock from HS Precision, but the other day I saw the stock on the Remington 700 XCR and I liked the sandbag hook on it. I will be shooting this rifle from a bench sometimes, so this could come in handy for me. I know that Bell & Carlson doesn't list it on their website so I'm going to call them very soon to see if they actually sell it to the general public or only to Remington.

I'm very jealous since I'd love to get into gun smithing as a hobby. Definitely post pictures when you're done. Or better yet, post pictures during the project so we can all follow along!

alright, I think I might can post some pictures along the way. Were you thinking of like "in process" of me gunsmithing the project, or just like different places that I'm at and how the rifle is coming along?

I picked up a similar deal at Gander Mtn also two years ago. I got an older Rem 700 in 30.06 for $175. The stock had some nicks on it, and half the polyurethane was gone. The action and bore were fine. The tip of the barrel had some surface rust, that I used 00 steel wool and oil to buff off. It came right off and didn't even need to be re-blued. The best part is, I put a Nikon Pro Staff on it and a Limbsaver recoil pad, and that think will shoot 1 MOA or less all day long.
