Re: What would be your first choice to defend your family's life?
Ok I'll answer the original question now that I made my suggestion.
WCS - Nightstand Glock 26 / Golden Sabre
If I have 2-3 more seconds...
The following options are available and loaded for the best HD results;
AR15 16" light barrel / bright light / Hornady TAP 55gr
Remington 870: 18.5" bbl / knoxx PG stock / Hornady Defense 2 3/4 00BK
Multiple AK's loaded with 124gr WMC JHP. And even one of the drum's are full of the same ammo ready to rock if it's an all out invasion...
Everything is always stored loaded to suit a HD situation. What gets grabbed, is what gets grabbed. First and second choice are the AR, and the 870. But most likely the AR for many reasons, mostly the ammo, and the light. I do not want to accidentally shoot my absolute first line of defense... my dog!

Re: What would be your first choice to defend your family's life?
Okay, I’ll take you at your word. There are so many posters lately giving one line jabs anymore that I kinda get defensive. FYI, usually "jokes" have a smiley face at the end.
So, while I stand by my words, I’ll apologize to you for being a little harsh toward you about your "joke".
You are free to carry as frequently or infrequently as you choose. I however like to be prepared. But there are times that I do not carry, very rarely though. Like I said, you never know when evil may decide it’s your day.

I asked my a college roommate of mine this question and he said the 48" katana sword on his dresser, "Nothing scares someone like the thought of being run through." were his words to me
