Re: 5w20 synthetic motor oil
I ran out of CLP and needed to clean my AR. All I had was some of that High Performance Royal Purple Synthetic and hardly used any to lube it. Everything seems very smooth so we shall see.

Re: 5w20 synthetic motor oil
Agreed with these folks, synthetic motor oil is, if anything, overkill for use on guns. And cheaper than oil marketed for use as gun lubricant to boot.
Any mission, any conditions, any foe at any range.
Twice the mayhem, triple the force.
Ten times the action, total hardcore.

Re: 5w20 synthetic motor oil
I don't see why it would cause any problems, but it won't affect the heat situation. That's just typical of AK's. Really of all guns, but you notice it more because AK's aren't exactly designed with comfort and ergonomics in mind.
If you want to avoid the heat, you can get polymer furniture from K-Var that has a heat shield built into the handguard.
I don't see how the oil would hurt anything, I'm sure it would be an effective lubricant, just won't help the heat situation.

Re: 5w20 synthetic motor oil
I used it on my ak today and lemme tell you there was a difference. It came with some grease when I bought which I thought wa good but when I put the motor oil on it, racking it was really smooth. I like it. I put 100 rounds down range, no problems at all.

I've been using 0W-30 Mobil 1 to lube the bolt in my AR with no problems! IMO it works a lot better than Breakfree CLP.

Re: 5w20 synthetic motor oil
I just lubed my 1871 mauser with Mobile 1. It was handy and will do a fine job.
Now, I see AMSOIL advertised here. I changed the dif and tranny fluid in my wife's BMW last fall with AMSOIL. It was like I got a new car. Seriously, it was that good.Last edited by Captain Emo; May 13th, 2012 at 08:59 PM.

Re: 5w20 synthetic motor oil
I use synthetic motor oil. My choice is 5W50, although that's hard to find and IF I ever run out of the two quarts I have, I may have to default to 10W40. I transfer it to a small needle oiler bottle from Brownells and add in some powdered molybdenum disulphide. IMHO it's far superior to any "gun" oil on the market.
