    Default New XD 9

When I got my new xd9,It had a empty shell casing in a envelope.
Does this me they enter the shell into a national data base?

No. Some states (I believe MD is one, but not sure) do have databases with a record of the "ballistic fingerprint" of all guns sold there, they keep that shell when they transfer the firearm to you. The fact that you have the casing means it wasn't given to anyone. AFAIK all new handguns come with that. At least I know Glocks do.

The dealer told me not to open or lose the envelope. The bullet for that casing is on file in the FBI data base.

Your dealer is a dummy. I threw mine in the brass bucket at the range. What could the tell from the bullet that was in the casing? There's nothing even remotely identifiable on it that could be used to trace it to a particular gun.

The firing pin can be used to match shell casings. However, after a few thousand rounds I am sure they will be different enough to make the shell casing just another feel good measure.

Never realy checked or cared and you are correct if you have the casing it's not recorded in any database.
