    Default Check your carry ammo!

Just a reminder for anyone who carries daily. Yesterday I went about my usual routine before bed, and un-chambered a round out of my Glock and proceeded to insert it into the magazine. I've been doing this every night with the same round for a couple of months now. Then I noticed that the bullet was sticking out of the case a little bit. I twisted it with my finger and it was so loose it just pulled right out! I don't know how long it has been like this but it really made me feel uncomfortable. Obviously this happened from chambering the same round over and over again. I decided to load my gun in the morning by putting the round directly into the chamber, rather than feeding it from the magazine. This may also reduce wear on the magazine spring.

On a side note, I think its probably best to leave the round chambered over night and just put the gun in a safe. I'm in the process of moving and my safe is not at my new house yet so this isn't possible.

EDIT: btw these were speer gold dots.

that's a good way to wear your extractor.

personally, i think, unless you have kids, it is better to leave the round chambered and leave the gun on your nightstand at night. if you wake up to a home invasion, you want to be able to grab a gun that is ready to go right now.

Do you sleepwalk or are you uncomfortable having your gun on your nightstand ready to go?

I just put the gun (chambered) on the nightstand in it's holster.

I do have a daughter, and I feel like the best solution for me is grab the shotgun, which has a chambered round, safety on, flashlight mounted, in the safe. And I unlock the safe every night before bed, so I don't have to mess with any locks in the dark.

I'm comfortable with myself, but NOT with my one year old daughter.

Really? I thought springs wear out from repeated compression/decompression, and not constant pressure.

    gotcha.

if you want to keep unchambering at night, you could rotate ammo so you are not constantly rechambering the same round.

the issue is that the extractor is designed to have the rim of the case slip up under it from the bottom as the round feeds from the mag. by putting the round in the chamber and dropping the slide, the extractor has to snap over the case instead. this means it has to move further than usual and impacts the case rim in a way it usually does not.

in theory, at least, this could lead to wear on the extractor itself (not the spring) as well as wear on the spring because the spring is moving a greater distance more often.

i don't know if it ends up mattering in reality, but that is the theory.
