Arrow What is the average distance bear are taken at in PA

What are the distances at which you have taken bear in PA? The closest to the longest range. You can include the cartridge and firearm of your preference if you wish.

Only one. 130 something live weight. 6o yards with a 700 in .270 with a 130 gr. Sierra handload. Went about 20 yards with a broadside hit.

    Nice looking bear!!!

So what do most of your gang choose to hunt with (firearm); if you don't mind me asking?

I have a Remington 7600 in .35 Whelen myself but was thinking about getting a Marlin 1895SBL in .45-70. I have always wanted one and they pack a wallop up close with Buffalo Bore ammo in them.

Is it me or does something just seem wrong about being out in the woods hunting and using a cell phone?

As I've never taken a bear I don't have a personal average distance. The few people who have taken bear on my father's property have done so from short distances, mostly under 50 yards. His property has a lot of brush which the bear like, but also makes them hard to see and chase. I've personally stumbled onto a bear that was only about 5 yards away, and only knew it was there when it woofed at me from the bush it was in. Almost everyone uses either a .308 (myself included) or .300win mag, though I use a slug gun for deer with which I can hit a 4" target at 200 yards all day long. I will probably switch to .22-250 for deer this coming season, mainly because I won a Remington Model Seven Predator at an Elk Country Alliance dinner that is a great shooter and significantly lighter than my .308.

What's wrong with that? Where I hunt most often, cell phones are not only more reliable than walkie-talkies, but you don't have to spend a decent chunk of change for a good set or two or three. I also most often hunt away from the rest of my group; because of asthma I have a hard time hoofing it through the woods in the winter, so I tend to either be driven to or sit in a high stand from which I have several long sight lines. A cell phone lets me get in touch with anyone I need to. Ch-ch-ch-changes.
