    Default 1911 Hammer

This is probably a stupid question but I'm new to 1911's. I just got a Rock Island Commander and was looking at putting on a commander style hammer to avoid hammer bite. My question is can I put on a different hammer without adding an extended beavertail, and if so does anyone have any recommendations? Sorry if this has been answered before but I did a search and couldn't find anything.

    Thanks,
    Brian

You can certainly put on a different hammer. But it will bite you just the same if your not carefull. The beaver tail is what keeps you from getting bit, not a change of hammer, well, and watching that you don't get your grip up to high will help .

Thanks, I was thinking the rounded commander hammer wouldn't come back as far as the other one. Maybe I'll just put a beavertail on it.

i had a combat comander many years ago. now the problem with the comander style grip safety is it is too short but not short enough but long enough to put the web between the hammer and the top of the safety.

the way i fixed mine was to cut and work the top of the grip safety down so it was even with the frame. another way would be to try a 1911a1 gripsafety as they are longer. so the web does not get up under the hammer.
