Pre WWII Savage Model 4 Questions
So I did a swing by a local shop on my way to the range last night and picked up a really old Savage Model 4 with the checkered walnut stock and no serial numbers (pre WWII from what I've read) for $45!!! Took it with me to the range and in all that heat & humidity, fading daylight and the less than stellar scope I was pulling touching hole patterns at 25 yards. It is missing the sights and the magazine and has a Mossberg M4b .22 scope mounted on a No. 8 Mossberg side mount. The bolt flips almost straight up so a guy has to get really creative with the scope mount. I was gonna pic up a magazine and replace the sights on it, refinish the stock and call it good, but what if a guy wanted to mount a decent scope with decent rings on this thing? Any suggestions? Anyone own one with a scope? Thoughts or comments?

Re: Pre WWII Savage Model 4 Questions
dude, that's vintage bad-ass. refinish if you must, and replace the sights if you want to (and can find them) but I would say don't mess with it. the groups are good enough for squirrel MOA.
If you were going to mount a scope, it may be easier to bend the bolt handle down like i think they do on some mousers. then you don't need to worry about side mounts. Keep it for what it is or restore it and sell it to me for 60 bucks!

Re: Pre WWII Savage Model 4 Questions
Well seems like the side mount Weaver 48402 base and the 49350 rings will work so the issue is now should I;
1) buy the mag, refinish the stock, clean and rebuild the scope
= $70 invested
2) buy the mag, refinish the stock, dump the scope, buy replacement sights
= $110 invested
3) buy the mag, refinish the stock, add new side mount base rings and scope
= $150 invested
Since the gun is only worth about $100 I'm leaning towards option #1. Thoughts?

option 1 for sure. you can always add on, and i'm pretty sure you have another 22 bolt you can screw around with. keep this one stock and enjoy the heritage.

Re: Pre WWII Savage Model 4 Questions
Yea, for now I believe option 1 is the way to go. I just hope I can get the scope back together :-)
