Default New Mossy 500 - OUCH!

Ok, just bought Mossy 500 Tactical 12ga. Wow. Very cool.

This is my first shotgun and I'm very happy with purchase. But, the think just about rips my shoulder off. Yes, call me names. But the son-of-a-gun hurts with 00buck coming out the other end.

It has the ATI 6-pos stock on it - has anyone put an aftermarket pad on the aftermarket stock? I'd like to get the pain down into the 4-5 range if possible!

I am with you you on this. I got a Mossberg 500 JIC a few months back and the last and first time I shot it I swear it burst a blood vessel in my arm. My entire arm was sore the next day or two. I had the stock up tight against my armpit like you are supposed to.

    Are you kidding me?

00 buck shot and complaining about the kick...

if you bought a semi auto kick is less.

Dude, practice and you will not feel a thing.

Sometimes I wonder if people get used to shooting small caliber rifles and can't handle 12ga shotguns?

try a 12ga 3.5 in semi auto.. turkey loads...

Great guns. I don't remember if the JIC model(s) have the telestock and have never fired a Mossberg w/one, only a Choate top-folder. So, first I would suggest putting your (presumably right) arm all the way out parallel with the ground. Now, from the elbow ONLY bend your hand back in to your chest -- around where your fingertips are is where there should be a little hollow and that where you stock goes. Not on your shoulder. And not just the bottom tip if you can manage it. And as mentioned, hold it firmly to that hollow so the gun is not flying back and "hitting" you.

Now, accept that shotguns are really devastatingly powerful long-barreled pistols with some sharp recoil to remind you of this.

Next, if you are using this gun for home defense (in and around the house for more like 15 feet than meters) then stop using 00 Buck rounds! Go order a flat of Remington Express Extra Long Range 2-3/4" 1-1/4 oz. #2 (.15) shot shells for about $125+. This swan shot should be your new go-to HD round. Regardless, buy any of the cheap forum advertisers' or BoxMart sport-pack sleeves to practice with a little more softly, cheaply, frequently and funly...

When I first got my mossy 500 12g, I bought all kinds of ammo, birdshot, 4 buck, 00 buck, and 3" 000 buck. I can't use 3.5", barrel isn't made for them. Bird is cake, buck is nice, the 000 buck is in a league of its own, haha. It's still way managable, but I know I wouldn't be spending too much time shootin that lol.

I never really had a problem with my 500 or 590. Yeah they kick, but not bad.

I cant speak to the ATI stock, and a rubber pad, I know they are available for the AR-15 stocks, If it fits, it would probably help to some degree.

I replaced my original parts with a Hogue - Stock & forend, I have the Tamer pistol grip also. The Hogue parts are top notch.

I can shoot this thing one handed with the Hogue pistol grip.

I am not going to get into bird shot vs buck shot discussion.

Bird shot is not great for defensive ammo, especially if they are dressed in winter clothes.

Pattern your gun just to see center shot. Use some type of buck shot.

As with any firearm in the home, you have to be aware of your surroundings, who is in the next room or apt. and how far your bullet or shot will travel.

Thanks, guys. I've got some research to do.

I've heard 00 buck is the way to go for HD, so I'm surprised to read different here. I'll do some more thinking about that too. My longest shot in a HD situation is likely under 25 ft, and I live in a house.
