Default Best Home Defense Weapon? (IYHO)

I would be interested in hearing your opinions as to what you would consider to be the best home defense weapon. Please take into account the following considerations:

    - Must be legal for average citizen to own (not full auto, not nuclear, and not incendiary)
    - Neighbors are in close proximity (and yes they are good neighbors so no collateral)
    - Children in the house (same as neighbors)
    - Needs to be effectively usable by a variety of people (say 120 lbs on up)
    - Minimal training (I know that this makes the biggest difference of all, but not everyone will train as much as needed)

    Much thanks

The best weapon, IMHO, is the one that is closest to me when the SHTF.

If you want to be protected at all times, then carry a handgun around with you, even in your house. If you don't want to do that, then the best weapon is the one you're most comfortable using, and the one you can set up to be most readily, yet safely, accessible in the greatest number of situations.

There's no such thing as a good home defense firearm that won't cause collateral damage to neighbors. If a projectile has enough energy to penetrate a bad guy sufficiently to incapacitate him, it also will have enough energy to penetrate several walls an still injure or kill any neighbor who happens to be in the way. That's why it's important to plan for as many home defense scenarios as possible taking into account where the rounds will go if they pass through walls.

A handgun is probably easier to keep secure from children in a way that it is still fairly accessible, because you can use a small combination safe, one that you can even move around as needed.

Based on that item, personally, I'd say a baseball bat. Especially with children in the house.

Just my opinion, but I wasn't comfortable having a firearm in my home living alone until I had some training with it and then kept it at home with no ammo until I had enough practice handling to make sure I was proficient at handling it safely (muzzle always in safe direction, finger always off the trigger, etc).

Well there will be lots of answers. Some say shotgun some say pistol. Some say rifle.

Truth be told The best weapon for home defense is the weapon you have available to you when the time comes. So have plenty to choose from.
    223. caliber weapons are good because they have a tendancy to have trouble penetrating cover especially using frangible ammunition. 12 ga is good but is messy because think what happens when you brain somebody. The cops arnt going to clean that up for you.pistol is compact

The one you have on you right now as he is coming in the door this very second!

If you have to get up and move to it, its to late.

    Just a thought.

    AR-15, hands down.
Any mission, any conditions, any foe at any range.
Twice the mayhem, triple the force.
Ten times the action, total hardcore.
