Hunting deer w/ a .50 BMG
Anyone ever shot a deer w/ a .50 bmg? Just wondering if it knocked it over or blew right through?

Re: Hunting deer w/ a .50 BMG
You do realize a cannon like that is not easily carried
around the woods like a Win. 94 right??
Good read on the big 50.

LOL...we've all dreamed of doing it, but I don't think it would be too feasible. As mentioned above, most BMG's weigh in excess of 30 lbs! I sure wouldn't wanna hump that through the woods! Stationary hunting may be a different story, but I still doubt it. Great question, though...welcome to the PAFOA!

Re: Hunting deer w/ a .50 BMG
If I don't get an answer in a week or two I will be left no choice but to find out for myself. Followed by pics of coarse. Luckily I live in the center of 20 acres of woods and farm land and have deer in either the front or back of the house every mourning so I won't have to hump the .50 long. I wasn't planning on doing any hunting this year but the freezer is getting a little hollow. Thank you for the warm welcome.

Personally I think that .50 BMG is better served as a varmit cartridge. If I ever get one, one of the first things I intend to do is see how well it handles groundhogs.

Re: Hunting deer w/ a .50 BMG
The guys at Dogbegone.com used the .50 bmg on prairie dogs in their second video. Ya'll should check out their site some time, they have lots of funny shots if gore doesn't bother ya. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the distance, bullet fired are what will affect what it does to the deer. I have shot deer at 85 yards with a .300 winmag 180 Nosler ballistic tip and shot right clean through them. I have had a 180 grain nosler ballistic tip bullet pass directly through the rib (not expand) and make a hole the size of my pinky on the back shoulder. I hate hit coyotes in the front shoulder with the 180 grain nosler ballistic tip bullet at 500 yards, walk up to them to find a hole bigger than my fist on the backside. The .50 BMG bullets are alot heavier so they'll have to hit something solid to make them expand or so that they can shatter the bone and use it as shrapnel inside the animal. If you hit something soft kind of up close, it might just shoot right through them. I think it all just depends. Oh and for those interested if you want to see what a Nosler ballistic tip bullet does to a coyote's head at 300 yards, drop me a PM, I'll warn you now, it ain't pretty.
