What is the tool that removes the cover on a revolver?
As the title says...but more specifically for S&W revolvers.

not sure what you mean by "cover" but the right hand sideplate comes off with a simple screwdriver. and one of the sideplate screws is longer as it retains the cylinder crane.
I suggest using the exactly right size hollow ground screwdriver to avoid buggering up the screws."Oderint Dum Metuant" - BMFH

Perhaps I should rephrase. How would you go about removing a cover that is on there pretty tight?
I was planning on changing the springs out of my late 80's S&W 686 that has lots and lots of rounds through it but don't want to booger up the plate that is pretty well stuck.

Brownell's used to have a tool for sideplate removal but I cant find it...
Just take the grips off, remove all the screws, and tap on the butt with a mallet until it works itself loose..
here's a model 10 sideplate removal at 7:45 into the vid

Good advice and video from triggerhappy. Just to reiterate:
NEVER try to pry off a S&W side plate.
NEVER use the screws to "pull down" a side plate that isn't quite seated.
If you do, the results will make you very unhappy.

indeed, I've had a few that stick now and then, if you are talking about the screws, apply light heat, if the sideplate, I use a rubber hammer over a soft surface.

As stated. Tap the stripped grip frame on the same side as the plate.
But..... judging by the things I've seen inside S&W revolvers that pass by my bench, unless you absolutely know (for real) wth you are doing in there I would recommend NOT taking it off._________________________________________

Nothing like getting a lesson on how a revolver works like loosing a part and having to re-adjust.
Been there, cried about that
