Tony, I have the perfect holster for it. Just for you... Free if you want it. Its a duty pd holster.

    What is a pinned barrel?

I have a Smith & Wesson Model 36, it seems like an oldie kind of and has the really deep blueing. Is mine pinned?

You mentioned at the GS that I should look for an older model. Is there a date and/or model range I should be looking at?

    Thanks for sharing.

EDIT: So it's a .38? Is there any difference between that and the 36 except the barrel size? I think mine is a J Frame but I don't know the difference between that and a K frame.

EDIT II: Is this the same gun?

I'd have to see yours. If you look at the close up view where the barrel screws into the receiver, in the top strap there is a very small pin. This pin indexes the barrel to ensure the front and rear sights are plumb. S&W doesn't do that anymore and *occasionally* you'll see non pinned barrel slightly canted.

I recommended an older model so as to avoid the internal lock present on current models.

I don't know enough about S&W manufacture dates to advise.

    Yes, 38 spl.

Your 36 is a 5 shot J frame. My Model 10 is a 6 shot K frame. Frame size is the difference.

Yes. Basically. Except that the post war models have improved lock work over the pre WW2 and WW2 victory models.

Tony's Picture, you can clearly see in the circle the pin, this locks the barrel in alignment with the body, newer models do not have this, my mod 66 is not pinned, but now it is locked with locktite.
