    Default AK-47

ok so i searched the forum and found some stuff about the AK-47 but nothing about what to look for see I am not in the market yet but hope to be soon for a inexpensive Ak i know prices are and will rise but the question is what is important to look for in An AK i have shot a few but don't know what makes a good AK i mean what do you look for when buying one? i know a fair amount about guns so i know the basics but what are some thing specific to AKs?

    any that are particularly bad?

this is more just out of curiousity than anything i really just love to learn about firearms. but revolvers and lever guns are really all i really have good knowledge on i am just getting into semi autos.

i know little about these particular ones but think they are cool so want some info.

Well, there are a ton of different AK variants out there...you generally get what you pay for. With that said, some of the low end variants can run around $300-$400 (Romy WASR-10 and Saiga Sporters) and the higher quality guns (SAR's, Arsenals and Lancaster Arms) can be well over $1000. I'd say that you can get a decent AK these days for around $600. I think one of the best values out there is the Yugo AK. It's well built and reliable, but they seem to be drying up fast! Hope this helps!

I just posted a little info here:

    http://www.pafoa.org/forum/rifles-42/35231-ak-47-a.html

Maybe we can merge these two threads to save confusion and double posting...

    Merged threads.

Folks, please at least look at threads that have the EXACT same name as the one you want to start to see if it's about the EXACT same topic.

    Thanks.

It really depends on what your looking for.

    Best what?
    - Best for the price
    - Best investment
    - Best as far a accuracy

As most people will agree the Yugo AKs are probably the best deal for the money, although I would say a converted Saiga is up there.

If your looking for something up to say around $500 or so, look for these
    - Yugos
    - Romanian SAR1
    - Saiga
    - Chinese MAK-90

If you bump that up to say $800 or so
    - Bulgy
    - Vector Arms
    - Polish

if you bump that up to say $1500
    - Pre-ban Chinese
    - Pre-ban Yugo
    - Some nice Hungarian

That's also a matter of opinion.

If I had to pick a "best" AK it would be a transferable preban select fire.

Buy hey that's just me, with money is no object.

Yeah, I don't think there is a "hands down" best AK...it is a metter of everyone's opinion.

My opinion would be the Yugo AK's...built like a brick crap house and arguably accurate!

Here is some info about the 4 you mentioned ... again I don't know if you could choose a "best".

Vector - Great shooters ... usually made from Polish and Hungarian parts so you most likely will not get a gun with matching numbers.

Arsenal - Great guns ... come complete (not US receiver) from the Bulgy factory and modified here from things like Hi-cap mags, etc

Lancaster - not quite sure about them ... but heard a lot of good things about their rifles. I believe they build on imported kits.

SAR - This is a Romanian rifle that was imported before the ban so you get a Rifle that was not modified here in the US, plus has a Romanian receiver.

I'm a big fan of Yugo rifles so I would have to put a pre-ban Yugo pretty far up there.

BTW if you really want to know the "best" head over to www.theakforum.net and ask there. Those guys have forgot more than I will probably ever know about AKs
