Looks like a M14 but I don't see a mag. How about the background story?

Re: Found this when going through some old pixs
great pic Grizz, classic piece of early suppressor tech, thats a very old Sionics 308 can, you can tell from the blast chamber pressure relief valve sticking out the bottom.
only problem with that design is the port would pop open, and a little starburst of flame would pop out.

Re: Found this when going through some old pixs
We have some sharp and knowledgeable members on this site.
Yes/No The rifle was a prototype M-21 (essentially the M-14) with suppressor
Yes, the suppressor is Sionics, but in early 1964, it was considered state of the art.
The rifle was a prototype M-21 Sniper Rifle, that is essentially a National Match (NM) grade Springfield Armory M14. It utilizes a heavier machined barrel, a modified trigger group for more consistent release, as well as a Redfield/Leatherwood variable power (3-9X) Automatic Ranging Telescope (ART) which Incorporated a stadia range finder to allow to shooter to more accurately compensate for bullet drop.
This was the fore runner of the M-21 Sniper rifle which was introduced in 1969, the M-21s were initially issued with wooden stocks but these were later replaced by synthetic stocks which were less subject to warping. Firing match grade M188 7.62mm ammunition, the M21 was accurate out to 800m.

An excellent history book is "The Long Range War" by Peter Senich, the history of sniping in vietnam.
shows how modern sniper doctrine and weapons came about in Vietnam.
lots of pics and illustrations.
all that gun needs is a ANpvs-2 and its historytastic:-)"Oderint Dum Metuant" - BMFH

For those interested, LRB Arms is soon coming out with their "new M25 receiver featuring an improved scope mounting provision".
Lou has been working on it for over a year.
