Angry Well It finally happened to me...

Last night I was at a SuperBowl party with a bunch of people I knew, and a select few I didn’t know.
I was CC my XD-40SC, I picked a nice button down shirt that was a bit longer so it would cover up my side arm. After a few frosty beverages, the chips and pretzels started flying, people were screaming and hollering at the TV. Well it was a house full of guys, football, and beer what can I say... After I sat down from screaming at the steelers to make a tackle, the guy next to me had his head cocked and had a concerned look on his face.

    “What is that?”

    “What is What?”

    “That! Is that a gun?”

    “Yep”

    “Why do you have that?”

    “Its my right”

    “Uh, No thats a weapon”

At this point I really didn’t care to be talking to him because I was missing some good commercials!

“Ok, so what is your problem with me having a gun?”

He had a shocked look on his face and was getting a bit antsy.

“Guns are a problem in this country, there are shootings all the time for no reason, and you are not solving anything by carrying a gun.”

Now I am assuming he is from the philly area, because we have a lot of college kids up here from philly and I will bet he is all of about 19 years old. So I’m trying to be nice.

“Look man, I carry a gun because I can, I took all the proper steps to carry a gun, I aint a gangbanger looking for trouble. If you have an issue with me having a gun, sit somewhere else or leave.”

He got all huffy and got up and walked over to one of my buddies and started to talk to him about me, I know this because the kid was pointing at me... A few minuets later my buddy comes over and sit next to me. My buddy also has his LTCF.

“Do you have your gun on you?”

    “Yea”

“Well so-and-so says you were making him uncomfortable”

    “Are you Fu$*ing kidding me?”

“Can you just go put it in your car?”

    “Are you being Serious?”

“Yea, lets just defuse this now”

I was furious, so I agreed and went out to my car.
I was to pissed off to go back inside, so I went to my girlfriends house to watch the rest of the game...
Has this ever happened to anyone else? What would you have done in my situation?
Do you think I did the right thing?

I think you did all you could do, respect the wishes of the homeowner.

    I would have left also.

You did just fine in my opinion. What were your options... refuse and start an argument over some other guys inbred fear or guns? It would have not won any points for you, not let you enjoy yourself, and only had you more upset than you were already.

As a gun owner who carries, you need to be ready to understand that there is a time to fight and a time to just back away from a situation that really has no need to be elevated. Sure, in a perfect world you would walk around armed and everyone would ignore and not care... but alas! We live in a culture that has various opinions. Pick your battles. That wasn't one of great importance....

Some guys would have made a stand there... they would have insisted thier right to carry trumps that mans fear and insecurities... and right... or wrong... all it would do is upset everyone involved and leave the gun-fearing folks that were in attendance more reason to fear and hate legal and civil (polite) gun owners.

So, looking at it that way... you did not feed into any stereotype that only would have pissed off your pals and hurt the collective cause of gun owners. You removed yourself from a situation and.... you would not have changed his mind any ways. Gun fearing folk..like my own mother.... are beyond reach. Its like talking to a wall. A really dense and stupid wall.

Yes Mom, I still love you. But damn it... you piss me off!

Probably could have handled it better by pointing out WHY you carry a gun, not just because its your right but because it is to be safe... the seat belt analogy works well on most anti-gun people.

You could have also just lied and said "Its a requirement for where I work but lets keep that quiet as I'm not at liberty to discuss the details"
The first vehicles normally on the scene of a crime are ambulances and police cruisers. If you are armed you have a chance to decide who gets transported in which vehicle, if you are not armed then that decision is made for you.

Be prepared, because someone else already is and no one knows their intent except them.

You did the right thing by keeping a cool head, and made the right decision for yourself by walking away.

Yeah if homeowner asked..I'd have done the same.

I love debating anti gun people though...very much to my wife's dismay.
