Default "You're More Likely to be a Victim of Gun Violence..."

"...if you have a gun in the home and don't know how to properly clear a suspicious noise."

Kinston police say the State Bureau of Investigation is looking into a shooting this weekend that involved one of their own.

Police say Wilfred Jones, who was off-duty, accidentally shot his 18-year-old daughter.
This really has nothing to do with the fact that he's a police officer - I just find it amusing in general that he doesn't know how to differentiate between his own offspring and a robber, lol.

Also, I am glad he's a terrible shot - anyone with a better sense of where to shoot would have killed or more seriously injured her. Unless he had already comitted to pulling the trigger and was trying not to hit her in the chest...I dunno. Glad she's okay, tho.

People have said to me multiple times, "what if you hear a noise in the middle of the night, and you shoot towards it, and it turns out to be a family member?"

I usually just shake my head and say, "I don't shoot at noises."

I have to agree what an idiot. How do you not know what a 18 year old girl, let alone your daughter looks like. I just showed my dad so he makes sure he doesn't shoot me when I come home from work.

You just have to hope that Officer Jones doesn't pull night shifts.

If you wake up disorientated or half a sleep at what is going on, I guess. Then again you don't go forward with shooting right away or create a situation where you might auto react. It's like clearing a jam.

Who wakes up half-asleep, disoriented AND code-red?! Code-red usually wakes you straight up 100%

Wow, he's been a cop for 10 years and he gets startled that easily? What happened to "Police, Don't Move!"

It's possible he never went to the Code Red state, and/or even that Code Red wouldn't have cleared him.

The concept of involuntary reactions or automatism does have legal history. I'm not saying that occurred here, but just the idea that he may have had no idea of what he was doing.

That wasn't very helpful. He wasn't sleepshooting, he was awake.

On-Topic: I've gone from half-asleep and drunk to immediately wide awake and aware because while I was the passenger in my own car I believed I may have heard a valve tap.
