Default Who owns the hunting cabins?

Hunting cabins are in the news these days but I must confess I know little about them. From what I have gathered in the news they are fully furnished and stocked and open to anyone who happen to walk in. Heck, it looks like they got guns set aside for visitors too. One of the fugitives is said to have picked up a 20 ga shotgun. What’s the deal?

That's okay, some of us know little about a lot of things.

From what I have gathered in the news they are fully furnished and stocked and open to anyone who happen to walk in.
No, not quite. Some are fully furnished, some less so, just like vacation homes. They are PRIVATE PROPERTY and, as such, may or may not be fully stocked and supplied BY THE OWNER for the owner's use. Anyone else entering them uninvited is, at a minimum, trespassing.

Heck, it looks like they got guns set aside for visitors too.
No, if any guns are stored inside they are for the owners, not uninvited visitors.

One of the fugitives is said to have picked up a 20 ga shotgun. What’s the deal?
The deal is that some OWNER left something ON HIS PROPERTY and someone else STOLE IT.

Substitute "car" or "vacation home" or even "primary residence" for "hunting cabin" and figure out what the deal is with them, too. The same rules apply.

Apparently, a lot of them are owned by homely (read: 'butt ugly') Prison guards stuck in bad marriages.

Sounds to me like the guy picked the right privately owned cabin to break into and he lucked out....well,for a short while.

The cabin that they stayed in and got the shotgun is actually owned by a Clinton prison guard.

Up in that part of the state, I'd think that the prison was the largest employer in the area.

The hunting cabins could be owned by anyone having the desire to buy one. The problem with them is like any sporadically occupied property, they're a target of opportunity for those who don't mind stealing. Many such cabins in New York, Vermont and elsewhere are broken into.

At one time the Adirondack folks would leave their cabins unlocked to provide shelter for a person lost in the woods. That is still the custom in northern Ontario and Quebec so I understand.

How about that.I'm guessing it's the male guard that has been mentioned in the news reports?

Got the other guy. Walking alone down a road. Cop said stop, he broke into a run, cop shot him. He was unarmed, now in the hospital in serious. Shot in the back, unarmed...damned good thing he is white.

Hmm, wasn’t that long ago that shooting someone in the back while running away would land you in jail.
