From my understanding there is a centane and sulfur content difference between #2 offroad diesel and home heating oil. Whether it's enough to make a difference in a diesel generator, I don't know.

Question about long term storage with food grade 5 gallon buckets. Does one need the gamma seal lids or can you use regular lids without a risk of contamination?

I guess it depends if you're putting your stuff in sealed mylar bags or not. If not, I would go gamma seal. If you are you can probably get away with just a regular lid.

Another option of course is to just buy an generator on ironplanet.
Thanks for the link. I'll check them out. I'm not very handy with engines, sadly. I do have a 7 KW propane portable generator and a small inverter gasoline generator, but they are a pain.

The regular snap on lids have no seal.

I've started running a bead of food safe sealant around the inside of the ring that snaps onto the bucket, because the last batch of gamma seal lids didn't seem to fit right with the included o-ring.

I've seen that; if you fill a bucket with water and spin the lid on, then invert it, water isn't supposed to come out. But it does, with some of them.

A bead of sealant is a good idea.

    Depends what you are dealing.

For example. It if generally recommended you store dry food in Mylar with an oxygen absorber. You should never seal it just in plastic, as it is not air right, and eventually leads to degradation.

So if you are properly storing in sealed Mylar, the gama lid isn*t that important.

Took a look at Russia and Ukraine wheat export rankings, Russia #1 & Ukraine #5, they account for almost 1/3 of the world's wheat exports. You might want to stock up on chicken, beef & pork before we hit a hyperinflationary patch in meat prices. Baked goods won't remain untouched by a flour shortage either.

I know I'm always saying that I can't afford this and that, and I know that canned chicken/tuna/etc is not exactly inexpensive, but I've been stocking up on those items. The price of fresh meats has gotten very high, but the canned food price increases aren't quite as drastic.
Those items store for a good while, where my frozen food "stockpile" could easily be destroyed by a power outage.
May as well stock up on canned foods before they jump drastically in price.

I have more flour than we'll ever use thanks to the Covid food panic. Unfortunately, it's still in the paper bags and not packaged for long term storage, so I guess I should read up on how to store items like flour, pasta, and things like that.

I bought 2 huge bags of powdered milk for the Covid food panic. They are about at the use by date - or past it.
Anyone know if that can be resealed in something to keep it longer? (never opened - plastic bag packaging)

In the spring Walmart typically clearances out a lot of products across the store to make room for new items coming in.
A ton of camping and sporting goods stuff was out on temporary shelving in one of the aisles over the last few weeks. Tents, camp chairs, cook stoves, and all sorts of items were marked down. The longer an item is unsold, the more it gets marked down.
I thought all the camp stoves had been sold off last week, but yesterday, I spotted one that may have either been overlooked somehow, or was found in the back room, and brought out to the clearance section. It was originally $128.00 and was initially marked down to $100. When I saw the $100 tag, I almost walked away, but I spun it around to read the product specs, and saw another clearance price tag on the opposite side - "$50".

NOW we're talking! I spent a solid 5 minutes debating with myself about spending $50 on something I don't "need".
Eventually, I decided that I should buy it, take it home, and think about it more. If I change my mind, I can either return it, or sell it on Facebook Marketplace for $80 and make some money off it!

    I think I'll keep it.
Seems to get favorable reviews with one common complaint - it's hard to get the burners to "low" for a simmer.
Considering this is mainly for emergency usage, I think I can live with that "issue".
For $50 it just seems too good a price to pass up.
