    Default Stainless Ruger-77 question?

Got a Ruger M77 stainless in 308win. Installet a 3.5-10 Leupold scope in the supplied rings. Sighted it in.With all types of ammo including hand loads it would only shoot about 4 inch groups. Thinking I had nothing to lose began to shoot the rifle with any cheap junk ammo around including some Chinese stuff and old surplus crap. I would shoot the thing untill it wouls start to smoke. Then after all of this abuse I trie some good ammo again and now it shoots well under one inch now.The inside of the barel is now black and looks like junk. Why?

Sounds like you got the barrel "shot in" good. Should be good to go from here on out. Not unusual for new rifles to do that.

Clean it good and retry some good ammo and see what it does. Many barrels coming out of the factory need to have rounds put through them to smooth out the roughness left from the manufacturing process. After you thoroughly clean it, if it doesn't shoot good, contact Ruger and explain what is happening to them. They are a quality company and will make it right.

If the barrel did need to be "smoothed out" then would some sort of metal polish used on any rifle that will not shoot good help? This all makes sense.I have seen an old can of a stubstance called "x ring paste" Have you heard of it? Maybe all the old timers really knew there stuff? Live and learn.
