Mfr Date of S & W revolver ??

How can I determine the manufacture date of a Smith & Wesson revolver? Specifically a model 66.

If it is simply listed as a model 66 without any "hyphen followed by a number" then it would have been made between 1970 and 1977 when the 66-1 was introduced. The numbering went to 66-6 in 2002 when the key lock was introduced and then in 2005 the model was discontinued. Can get a better idea if you give the serial number (can leave off the last three digits) as they started in the range K946392 and then 1983 the number sequence in the K frames had reached 311K273. This data is from the bible of S&W, the Supica and Nahas 3rd edn. Dave_n
