    Arrow Humidity inside safe

Was using a Golden Rod electric thingy to keep humidity/moisture levels even.

Then I started getting a little paranoid about that. What if there's a short in the outlet or power cord for the rod and spark travels inside the safe?

And with the little hole for the power cord drilled in the back of the safe, there might be some oxygen getting in for the fire to burn(?)

I know the rod itself does not get hot enough to start a paper fire, so that was not a concern. I do keep some important papers in there as well.

So for the last month or so I've been using several tubs of Damp Rid in the safe.

The crystals are getting moist and starting to clump together, so it seems to be working.

Anybody else worried about a possible fire from a rod?

    Anybody else use Damp Rid?

I've always used a bucket of Damprid.
Although humidity is not much of an issue now that I have the cabinets on the main floor, out of the basement.
Not a true "safe" (airtight, watertight, or firetight).... I also carry increased insurance coverage for firearms.

I agree. ^^^^^^ Damprid works perfectly in my safe,

My goldenrod was bought back in about 1994 and still runs. It's UL listed so hopefully if it were to short it wouldn't cause a fire. Lots of things in your home could cause a fire.
i worry more about my coffee pot and toaster remaining plugged in than my goldenrod.
I'd imagine if it did , the carpet within the safe would smolder, maybe flame a bit and smolder again and put off much oder and that be about that other than smoke and oder damage. Hopefully the breaker would trip and I doubt the house would burn , although it would still suck.

On another note , I know a guy who for over 30 years has used a single big Christmas bulb in his safe. The old style they used to put out side.

He changes it now and then as it burns out and his safe is in his basement , he seems to think it gets hot enough to circulate the air thus taking the moister air out. I suppose it works as he has had no problems.

I have 4 Goldenrods running and I also was thinking the worst. Makes me nervous but so does RUST!
Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

I use the Remington mini de-humidifier model 365. Used it for years with no issues with rust. Just check the window every so often (every couple of weeks) and plug it in overnight. Then I put it back in the safe in the morning before heading out to work. Just another idea.

There is now an outlet called an Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter A.F.C.I. that you can put in place of the regular outlet in your safe. The AFCI is super sensitive to what you refer to as " short circuit" issues and is now required in all new electric house work. Expensive but effective. Might need a deeper outlet box because of the AFCI dimensions.

If it has electricity flowing through it, especially 120vac, it can fail, and it can fail in a spectacular manner.

I've seen boards catch on fire due to a failed component. While the risk may be minimal (because all that stuff sold in the US has that UL label on it) the risk is still there.

Yeah, that is my thinking now. Why take any risk, if the crystals can absorb moisture without electricity.

Unless a container of Damp Rid can spontaneously combust, I'm think I'm OK.
