Transporting Long Guns To NY
The boy comes home from California tomorrow, done with his training at Yahoo. On Weds he moves to his new location Lockport NY to begin his new life.
I have been told, but want to know all the ins and outs, that he can take his rifles with him during the move (his pistols will stay with us for now)
Can anyone give me the details of him moving there and taking his 2 rifles (a 22 bolt action and an M44) ... btw, I do know the bayonet HAS to be removed from the M44 and left here.
Just want to be sure I don't get one of those "Dad I got stopped by the NY state police and am being detained for the guns" phone calls
Did some Googling but my GoogleFu sucks tonight

Re: Transporting Long Guns To NY
Can you cite your source regarding the legality of a bayonet affixed to a bolt action, preban rifle? I have read the NYS assault weapons ban and other state laws in the BATF State Laws and Published Ordinances and do not recall this. The NY section is very long though, especially b/c every city can do their own thing, I will have to give it another read.

I have never had a problem, I routinely bring my 308, and 44mag lever along with my 3 shotguns to and from NY both up in the Catskill area and onto Long Island.

Re: Transporting Long Guns To NY
This is a link to the NY State section of the ATF publication State Laws and Published Ordinances. When I got my C&R they sent me a hardcopy, now it comes in CD form, but I googled and found they now publish it online. The NY section is 29 pages, happy reading.

I just used the search function for the PDF, "bayonet" only came up 2X.
16. "Assault weapon."
(a) Any semi-automatic centerfire or rimfire
rifle or semi-automatic shotgun which has one or
more of the following features:
..................................
3. bayonet mount;22. "Assault weapon" means
(a) a semiautomatic rifle that has an ability to
accept a detachable magazine and has at least
two of the following characteristics:
...................................
(iii) a bayonet mount;
For anyone interested, here is a link to the overall publication. Scroll down and on the right are the links for each state's laws.

Since it is NY there could be some kind of law against bayonets in general unrelated to firearms. But I have never heard of a bayonet being verboten in NYS.Last edited by MartinBrody; August 3rd, 2010 at 12:09 AM.

Re: Transporting Long Guns To NY
Only in new york city the bayo would have to be removed , if he is bypassing nyc he has no problems, all the gunshops i frequented in ny sell guns like m44 with bayos, if he has to to come into nyc , nyc still gives out of staters 48 hrs to pass through the city with your guns, .
BTw, there are some great gun ranges in lockport, great long range out door ranges there , its an NRA town btw.

Coming from a guy who has purchased an M91/30 in NY with a bayonet on it at the Syracuse gun show, you can have the bayonet on the mosin rifle in NY.

Re: Transporting Long Guns To NY
Well the boy is off, first a quick trip to Jersey to get the rest of his girlfriends stuff and then to NY state.
I took the bayo off and put it in a box just because of the little jaunt to Jersey.

Re: Transporting Long Guns To NY
The link to NY's gun laws was interesting. I just can't imagine real criminals losing sleep....hemming & hawing....wringing their hands about all the stuff written on that page. F'ing stupid.
