Default automatic lock on really old threads

I have seen a lot of very old threads get resurected, ones where the content is VERY outdated.

Could we auto lock any threads EXCEPT those in the firearms sections after say, one year of inactivity?

i say except the firearme ones cause a thread on a specific model or notion never gets useless.

but an old thread on a bill that has long since died and then a post one year later by someone who found it by google says "Holy Shit ! What do we do ! OMG OMG OMG" is another story.

I was starting to think the same thing...

Keep in mind this may piss off the people who love to nag on people for "not searching" as they may want to continue the topic but are generally told to "search first" and then are nagged on for necro-ing a thread.

    Lose lose in some cases.

I dont mind people starting new threads, that's why it's a discussion forum...to discuss things.

I say go for the lock on stuff older than maybe 3 months.

That pretty much happens in every forum.

    [makes new topic]

[zomggg use the search function we already spoke about this!!!11]

    [searches, finds a thread, posts]

[zomggg this thread is old, make a new one!1111]
Some forums tolerate modest bumps (a few months old) and some forums are too active to deal with what threads were bumped or not. I know at Coming Soon a 'Smallville' thread has been there since the show started (2001)!

OK, just had to blabber that tidbit out. :P

Just waht would be the advantage of locking old threads? I mean, if some one needs more info on some thing, and its locked, they will wind up reviving it by starting a new thread anyways right?

Maybe I am not getting the idea here.
