Ireland bans handguns
Justice Minister Dermot Ahern has signed new gun control legislation into law.
The act bans handguns in Ireland and also introduces a requirement for referees, background medical checks and standards for the safe keeping of guns in the home for all firearms licence applicants.
It also makes it an offence to brandish a realistic imitation firearm in public.
Mr Ahern says the legislation is designed to halt the emergence of a gun culture in Ireland.
(Note: There is no international sub-forum so I put this here...hopefully its the right place)

No need to worry about that, eh? I guess the history of Ireland is currently being rewritten to say they have always been buddies with England. What did they use to fight with for over 600 years? Rocks and sticks?Divided we ever have been, and ever must be.Two thirds always had and will have more difficulty to struggle with the one third than with all our foreign enemies. - John Adams

Re: Ireland bans handguns
Isn't Ireland governed by Britain or something? Or am I thinking about Scotland?
If so, it's a means of controlling subjects, nothing more.

Re: Ireland bans handguns
There are two Irelands. The north is still controlled by the Brits, Irish are second class citizens. Southern 5/6th's of the island has been different since 1922, 1937 or 1949 depending on when you want to consider them an independent nation.
This story is about the Republic of Ireland, the free part.Divided we ever have been, and ever must be.Two thirds always had and will have more difficulty to struggle with the one third than with all our foreign enemies. - John Adams

Re: Ireland bans handguns
This isn't surprising since they were pretty much banned anyway.
