Mossberg 500 Special Purpose?
Hey Guy's
I'm looking for a good all around 12 gauge. I'd like something with the synthetic stock and a matt finish, and something that could be customized on the tactical side. Mainly using the gun for skeet, and home security. Is the Mossberg 500 Special Purpose a good choice? Will it accept optics, and other accessories if I wanted to dd them?
Thanks

Re: Mossberg 500 Special Purpose?
If your heart is set on a Mossberg, I'd get a 590. Lots of Mossberg fans out there. I dislike how cheap the Mossberg feels in your hands. If you hold it up to a Remington 870, you will feel a huge difference. There are plenty of aftermarket goodies for Mossbergs.
Most current shotguns can be adjusted to fit optics. You thinking red dot or scope? If you get optics, make sure that the unit will survive the recoil of a 12ga.Last edited by aubie515; January 11th, 2007 at 03:10 PM.

Re: Mossberg 500 Special Purpose?
The only difference between the 500 and 590 is the amount of shells it holds right? Will either perform well at the skeet range with such a short barrel?

Re: Mossberg 500 Special Purpose?
I'd just buy another barrel for skeet. Say a 28" barrel for skeet and an 18" for HD. Mossberg's site shows that the 590 holds 9 shells and the others hold 8. The "special purpose" is a generic term because on their website all are showing "special purpose."

Re: Mossberg 500 Special Purpose?
the 590's dont have chokes
if you wanna shoot skeet get a shotgun with chokes
mossberg 500, Rem 870 i own both but care for my 500 more than the 870

Re: Mossberg 500 Special Purpose?
Does anyone know a fair price to pay for the 500? Should I go to Walmart for it?

Re: Mossberg 500 Special Purpose?
You can buy a mossberg 500 at Dick's sporting goods for 230.00 and then buy an 18" barrel for home defense. The problem with the 590 is with an extended mag tube you can't put on a field barrel, so no option on chokes, check the design on their website. The 500 is more versatile the 590 is more home defense and tactical. I've had both so I speak from experience. Good luck with your choice.

Re: Mossberg 500 Special Purpose?
My advice would be to look to the used market for an 870. Search the Auction sites, police trade-ins, and gun shows.
They can be had very cheaply and their easy to accessorize w/o paying the premium for a wilson / scattergun or robar.

Re: Mossberg 500 Special Purpose?
I guess this is what my original question should have been:
I would like to buy a new 12 gauge shotgun. I want something in a matte black finish (stock & barrel), something that can be used for hunting, skeet, and home defense. I would like one with changeable chokes, accessory rails, and one that I can change the barrel on should I choose to use an 18 or 20 at home. Looking for a pump, and not looking to spend more than $500. Any reccomendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
