How would you react?

How would the majority of forum members handle this situation if it happened to you, would you and could you legally return fire?

I'd be on the floor...praying.
You can't just shoot without knowing where your target (the assailant) is. And, standing up at a window to look puts you in jeopardy.
And, you cannot shoot at a retreating individual since you don't know if it's the shooter. Anyway, he's retreating...

Setting paramaters not given in the story.
The shooter would be unknown to me, more then likely a random drunk/druggie or at worst case, a gang fight outside.

Treat it like an ambush. Get low, pull back to the rear of the home with the AR and my go bag. Contain the dog in the bathroom. Get everyone else low and since I know who would be over, have them cover. Calll 911 and maintain my perimiter. Just because the animal on the street doesn't care doesn't mean I get to be reckless as well. It's a bad shoot due to what would be behind the shooter. If the shooter is actively attacking my location, catch them at a bottleneck like front door or side yard and make sure there is only one side to the story- mine.

Really is just a poo sandwich, and just hoping to take little bites.

Like he said.....If shooter comes in door then take him down with your weapon..

I knew that sooner or later I have to add areal illumination flares, sand bags and flash bangs to my home defense arsenal. Now how do I explain ALL THAT to my wife?
