Winchester 1894
I will be receiving an old Winchester 1894 that was originally purchased by my great grandfather. The serial number puts the date of manufacture at 1897 and from the research I've done it seems that these old guns really don't bring that much money. It seems that Winchester had such a hit on their hands and sold so many that this really never let the value come up much. Any way I can check on what the approximate value of the gun would be? Does anyone expect that the prices would rise now that the 1894 is no longer produced? Anyone know where I could get some 38-55 ammo for it?

Re: Winchester 1894
Dont bring much money??? Are you nuts??
My dad's model 1892 32-20 with long octagon barrel was just valued at $1550. He paid $500 for it about 12 years ago.
My Marlin model 93 32spl(four digit serial #) was valued at $900 just recently.
The Winny 94 Trapper 45LC that my uncle gave me two weekends ago is selling for $650 on GunsAmerica.com
Try buying any Winchester levergun these days, well maybe not the 30-30 94's(they are everywhere) - you'll see that you will pay a premium.
Check out www.gunsamerica.com if you want a market value of what your piece may be worth. It might take you awhile to find a similar model, but it may help you appraise your piece.

Re: Winchester 1894
Condition, caliber, model variance, custom factory options, are all to be considered when trying to place a value on any firearm.
original 94's in nice shape are getting hard to find.
I assume you have a .38-55. Ammo is hard to come by. It is available now because Winchester had a production run recently on brass and ammo.
Good luck, if you decide you want to sell contact me and I might be interested.

Re: Winchester 1894
Thanks for the quick responses. I guess "much money" is relative. My dad said that he thought it may be worth around $2700 but he never had it appraised. I guess I had expected it to be worth more since it was 110 years old.
And it is a 38-55 caliber. My dad said ammo in that caliber was hard to get if it could be gotten at all. I thought if there was ammo available in that caliber this site could help me find it.

Re: Winchester 1894
Its still being made today. Although most is "Cowboy" loads for CAS.
I think you can blow out 30-30 casings in a pinch to make 38-55 brass.
I'll take a look around for ammo for you tonite after work.

Re: Winchester 1894
At the Allentown show last weekend I was looking at Winchesters, 1894 and Model 71. They were up there and more. The dealer had an personal -engraved 1894 (1 of less than 1400 done that way) with the documentation for about $3500. The 71's Deluxe were in the low to mid 3k's. A 71 standard pre-64 like I have was Blue booked 6 years ago at $1200 is now getting $2400 at the shows.
Ditto on if you are selling, let me know,Veritas Vos Liberat
