Default Carry in a car: does the gun have to be on you?

When you are carrying in a car, do you have to have the gun on you or can it be sitting next to you, in the center console, etc?

I drive a Jeep Cherokee and in case you've never driven one, the seats are less than spacious especially if you have a holster on. I tend to take my gun out of the holster and wedge it between my seat and the center console.

Is this okay to do, or does it need to be on my "person"?

Depends where your girlfriend is. You could be situationally un-aware-ing-ly be poking her in the elbow making your drive less than entertaining.

    Just sayin...........

This is what the law says:
18 Pa. C.S. §6106. Firearms not to be carried without a license.

    (a) Offense defined.

    (1) Except as provided in paragraph (2), any person who carries a firearm in any vehicle or any person who carries a firearm concealed on or about his person, except in his place of abode or fixed place of business, without a valid and lawfully issued license under this chapter commits a felony of the third degree.
Many people carry their firearm in the glove compartment. Even though not on your person at the time, you are still carrying it in the vehicle, and an LTCF is required.

No, you do not have to physically carry it in your vehicle.

I have been in a few MINOR accidents (none that were my fault) and if you have not been in any yourself, you may be surprised at the items that dislodge themselves from all over your vehicle and fly about the car. Personally, mine is on my hip if I am in the car.

Sorry, but I have driven all kinds of vehicles and would never remove my gun from the holster and stick it anywhere.

I want the gun on my person where I know it is at ALL times. Not under a leg, between the seats, in a console, etc.

    Wait, you only carry one?

If I'm going to be in the car for more than a few minutes, and/or I'm going to be coming up on traffic lights at night, I'll grab a gun to put between my seat and the hump... in addition to the one or two other guns on my person. My car's interior is too small for me to quickly draw from any position on my body while inside the vehicle.
