    Default EDC Knives

Hey all, my wife asked me what I wanted from Santa and I've been eyeing up a decent EDC Knife, any recommendations? I'd like to keep it around $50.

    Thoughts on this one? http://www.sogknives.com/trident-tanto-black-tini.html

It would like be used for opening all the boxes my gun parts come in and picking my teeth after dinner. I'm sure once I start carrying it, I'll find all kinds of uses.

Looks cool, but there are more practical blades out there than tanto pointed blades. Get what you like and use the hell out of it. My personal opinion, for that price range I like the Ontario Rat 2 and various Kershaws.

Kershaw Cryo is the best bang for your buck knife. Very high quality.

Spyderco (many to choose from in that price range), or Benchmade Griptilian.

    I love my Kershaw Blur

Although I think they are asthetically pleasing, I personally don't care for a tanto style blade on my edc. It's kinda of awkward for slicing. Its more of a spike style for lots of pressure on the tip. Good for puncturing. I prefer a clip or drop point for edc, even a small bowie style. Something simple and easy to sharpen. I have an Ontario RAT folder. I paid $30 for it. I use it as my edc. I have nicer, more expensive knives but, I keep putting that one back on my pocket. I usually keep it near 3". I rarely need a bigger blade than that.

The Rat 1 is an excellent choice. But, this would be my <$50 go-to.

I have one and carry it frequently. However, the knives I carry the most are different variations of Benchmade's Axis knives, and a Spyderco Endura with the "wave".

You can find Benchamdes under $50, but Spyderco sub-$50 knives I think are better. Both brands have a lot of great offerings in the $75-150 range.

I carry a Benchmade Osborne or a Benchmade Mini Griptilian when I need something smaller.

What is your method of sharpening. A good sharpening system is more important than picking one 50 dollar knife over another IMO. At that price point they are all going to be "good" knives to the average person.

The Kershaw Blur that UJ mentioned is available in S30V steel. (I think it is one of the top selling knives right now in fact), but it goes for a little more than your budget. The standard Blur is Sandvic steel which is decent. VG10, which is the blade steel of many Spydercos at this price point is great, and like the other poster mentioned, the Spyderco Value line is great, made in China though if that bothers you. The quality is amazing though so don't let that scare you.

Without a decent way to sharpen, don't waste your money on the better steels in this price point (S30V, 154CM, etc). Does the blade lock type matter to you?

The kershaw blur and the spyderco tenacious are the best suggestions here so far, for your price at least. Spyderco is great and I love kershaw too. I have a blur and a tenacious, they are both great knives. The blur is assisted but the tenacious has that awesome spyderco hole.

I'd steer clear of the sog. Sog should stick to their fixed blades. I've been buying a lot of knives the past year and I have a handful of spydercos, kershaws, benchmades, etc and I recently bought a sog flash II and the thing is a piece of crap let me tell you. I had to take the knife apart and fuck with the lock bar spring the first day I had it. It's just a shit design and a shit locking system. Stay away from SOG folders, not saying they all suck but there will always be something Sooo much better you can buy.

The kershaw blur is one of the best $50 knives I've ever had. It just feels like quality and is a great solid knife. There's a lot of colors and blade styles to choose from, check amazon or bladehq. I do love mine. It's assisted opening. The tenacious is the first spyderco I bought and I love that knife too. The steel is similar to the blur, different but they perform similar and are easy to sharpen but stay sharp for a decent amount of time too.

For $50 I'd go for a Blur if you like assisted knives, other wise the tenacious. If you can spend a bit more then $50 there's a lot of great Spyderco knives with higher quality steel like VG10 or S30V that you could look at. The steel isn't a huge factor though, as long as it's not crappy steel like aus4 you most likely won't notice much of a difference. But bottom line is that Spyderco and Kershaw over SOG any day. I like some SOG fixed blades but I'm just not impressed at all from their folders.

I usually carry a spyderco paramilitary 2 which is a relatively expensive knife , but I still frequently carry my tenacious and blur as well as a spyderco delica4 because I like them so much.
