Pittsburgh police said an officer fired in self-defense early yesterday, killing an armed man who had been described as the antagonist in a dispute minutes earlier with his housemates on the North Side.

The officer, whose name has been withheld, shot Paul E. Palmer, 31, in the head, chest and leg, after Mr. Palmer pointed his .357-caliber Magnum revolver at him.

"This armed assailant was intoxicated. The officer repeatedly told him to drop his weapon, but he refused and the officer fired in self-defense," police Deputy Chief Paul Donaldson said at a news conference yesterday.

No. Palmer is the dead guy holding the .357 revolver.

The officer would be the one still sucking air and holding some form of technologically advanced autoloader.
