Re: SKS questions(help me choose my first rifle)
Unless you got to have one, an SKS doesn't make much sense. They are overpriced and they are starting to make the ban list ( including the ones with the fix magazine) in states behind enemy lines. I agree with the others who said get an AR 15 or an AK.
Like the Mini 14 , the SKS used to be the poor man's semi auto carbine.Last edited by eagleclaw; May 20th, 2020 at 09:40 PM.

Not bad, but I was thinking the shorter m4 length handguards with a birdcage.
As for the SKS, I'd prefer a wood stock, just one that'll accept an ak-47 magazine, preferably, although what you shared there could work too. The main concern is reliability and the awkward extra bit of the sks removeble magazines I've seen. That and overall cost. If the AR is cheaper anyway, I might as well just get it and avoid the modding.Last edited by DerpSchnitzel; May 16th, 2020 at 08:36 PM.

Re: SKS questions(help me choose my first rifle)
Okay I see.
Two possible issues.
1. I’ve never seen a mid or carbine length triangle hand guard.
2. A1/A2 style rifle (fixed carry handle) are now considered “Retro” and that brings a much heftier price tag. You can go with a Standard mid length rifle and add the A2/A1 stock and removable carry handle easy enough.
Here is a base rifle for that, they also offer it with standard furniture for a bit cheaper but it’s out of stock now. You could probably find the same rifle set up from DPMS or Bushmaster on CDNN for cheaper right now then make the above changes.

Or you can source a fixed carry handle upper and the parts and assemble your own.
The rifles you pictured are mid length hand guards, M4 hand guards are much shorter and typically only come only on a carbine length gas system.

Re: SKS questions(help me choose my first rifle)
Both the carry handle and triangle handguards are optional, just preferred, so it's okay if the handle is removable. But I have seen some repro foregrips and stocks for a car-15, also known as, I think colt m605, build. It's the first m16 carbine that's like a mini a1. I think they literally just cut everything down from the full rifle back then.
