Do you have Comcast? If so you can get Norton 360 for free. It's much better than the old Norton antivirus(doesn't eat up as much PSU resources) also if you get it, uninstall mcafee. Malwarebites is good but I have the free version. Also get spy it search and destroy 2.0 and you should be gtg.

I have been using Windows Defender (Win 8,10) aka Windows Security Essentials (Win 7, Vista) since it first came out. The product is rated similar to paid AV for security detection.

But most importantly. I practice good data and browsing habits. Knowing how to avoid fishing, adware, ransomewear, etc, etc, is the biggest battle. I also keep automatic updates turned on. I figure the chance of getting a bad update is less than postponing a security patch that keeps a vulnerability open.

Also if your not already behind some kind of router to access the internet do so. Preferably one that has some type of firewall in it.

I also back up my data.

Our networks guys recommended: Microsoft Security Essentials (free), Malwarebytes AND SUPERAntiSpyware (both paid versions) along with best practices (duh!) as the best combination. You can also add a VPN (EasyVPN or Surf Easy) for privacy. We also have a Watchguard firewall but I think that’s more for the server.

I use Surf Easy mostly to be able to watch stuff like Netflix outside the US. And more times than not Malwarebytes catches stuff that SUPERAntiSpyware misses and vice versa so experience shows that both are needed.

In the past I've used McAfee and Norton but they really seem to bog down the machines.
