P3AT Rust Problem -- Help
To start off, I am VERY anal about cleaning all my guns. I recently took apart my summer deep concealment piece (p3at) and was shocked to find some serious rust on and in the barrel!! I always clean up right after the range and usually once or twice a month. This is a little beyond me so i'm throwing it out there: Is there any saving this barrel?? From everything I have read about it, bead blasting and then electroplating with hard nickel usually solves this issue however i just have no idea where to get that done locally and how much it would cost vs a new barrel all together and or if it is even reversible damage. It's beyond me how this even happened. It is always carried in a don hume leather iwb holster and maybe once in a blue moon pocket carried. I dont sweat a lot... any ideas?

whoa. did you carry that thing dry? Keltecs like to be kept well lubricated, inside and out. i'd try MetalGlo paste on it. if that doesn't work, or if you have pitting (which you might have under the rust), send it back to Keltec, and see if they'll help out.

nope, don't carry it dry. I know better than that. That is why i was so shocked to find the rust. I'm not new to how to maintain and baby a good firearm. Maybe i should send it back or at least call them. I didn't even think of that.

Flitz Polish should remove the rust. Naval Jelly is stronger, be careful around bluing with that stuff. Once the rust is gone, you can see how pitted it is. I may be wrong, but I can't see Keltec covering rust damage. Not a defect.

Re: P3AT Rust Problem -- Help
As others have said, call Kel Tec and explain your situation.
They should take care of you.
I've dealt with a lady named Maryanne in customer service when I was having FTE issues with a P3AT and they were very good to me.

Re: P3AT Rust Problem -- Help
can you really shoot one that far, that a little barrel defect would render it unserviceable?
brush the rust out, patch it a few times and call it good and a lesson learned.
mine has gone from blued, to pocket polished to a now well browned finish, but never did it get rusty in the bore.

after looking at the pics.
that's nothing to worry about. you're over thinking a minimal issue.
steel wool or scotchbrite the exterior and brush the bore out.
problem solved.Last edited by brian; August 22nd, 2009 at 10:00 PM.

Humidity is also the enemy. Different types of exposure, outside in
the heat of the day and into airconditioning off and on over a few days
can be a problem if not checked. Any chance the holster was exposed to excessive moisture, especially if it was leather. Just a thought.FUNDAMENTALS

Clean the rust off with some BRONZE wool real good,,,, Drop it in a pot with some Synthetic engine oil, Put it in a double boiler and heat to 212* and let cool on it's own,,, Wipe it down and patch it out real well.
The Synthetic oil will penetrate real well and most likely the rust on outside wont come back.
