Checking Headspace
I'm looking at purchasing a couple of different C&R rifles, and have a question about checking headspace.
Is this something that I can do myself, or is it something that I need a gunsmith to do. If it's something that I need a gunsmith for, how much does it normally cost (range)? If I buy an inexpensive (~$80) Mosin, will it still be inexpensive after getting the headspace checked?
Thanks.

Re: Checking Headspace
I am pretty sure there are gauges $30-$40 that can do it for you.

Re: Checking Headspace
I would call around to a few 'smiths first....a reputable smith should only charge a few bucks to check headspace IF he has the proper gauges and give your rifle a once over.
I have .308's and .30-06 gauges (many builds and re-barrel jobs)...they run around $30-$40 a set, I have checked numerous rifles for friends also."Disperse you Rebels! Damn you! Throw down your Arms and Disperse!" British Major Pitcairn at Lexington April 19, 1775

Re: Checking Headspace
There's been a great deal of discussion about this already, most of it concerning the Mosin-Nagant rifle family. Please check these links when you have a fair amount of reading time:

You should be able to buy a button-style gauge for about $20, assuming you aren't successful finding anyone with a gauge near you.
