Poll: Is PA the friendliest state????
Well tomorrow I'm bringing the wify back home to start settlin in while I go back to kansas. ugh. 26 more days of boring army desk work..... O well Soon I'll be back in the Great state of PA.. You guys have no idea how much I've missed that place and all the people that inhabit it. Surprisingly not to many people are as nice as most people back in PA. Its really a warm homey feeling. I guess living by an army base doesnt help much either though. So this thread has a little question with it..
Do you think that other states have the same welcome and charm and friendliness as Pennsylvania? Also if you have a comment about a particular state you were in that was horrible please post which one and a small explanation.

Re: Poll:Is PA the friendliest state????
I voted no... But let me explain why.
PA is a great place to live period. People are friendly for the most part. But by far the friendliest place I have ever been is Vermont. There is just no comparison between the two, and rightfully so they're both two totally different worlds.

Re: Poll:Is PA the friendliest state????
When I first moved to Pennsylvania the first thing I noticed was how unfriendly people were. I drew the conclusion that maybe it's because I don't look caucasian even though I am part English. (My nationalities: part Hawaiian, part English, part Spanish and part Flip.)
When I started making friends, I asked them about it and they said "it's the personality of the Pennsylvania Dutch that you've been experiencing." They also told me that "a lot of the people who live here are stoic."
Well I've met a lot of stoic people through the years, and many of them have told me, "you're different because you smile a lot, and don't ever stop smiling because people around here don't know how to smile." Let me tell you, I haven't stopped smiling ever since.
All the people I know in Pennsylvania and consider my friends, have been living here all of their lives, so I guess they speak from experience.
With all that said, I must admit that I love living here in beautiful Pennsylvania, and plan to be here for a while, God willing.

P.S. I failed to mention that where I come from the people are very, very, very friendly!!! They call it the "Aloha" spirit.Last edited by dnar; May 10th, 2007 at 07:15 PM. Reason: edit text.

Re: Poll:Is PA the friendliest state????
I voted no. The friendliest place I've ever been to was North Carolina, at least the Asheville area was. I went to Asheville on a motorcycle trip. Always a big smile and hello, at any store or restaurant, when merging onto a highway people would actually slow to allow you on, unheard of in the Philly area. I was having trouble finding the campground I was going to stay at and asked a cop for directions , as he was telling me how to go, he said, "how 'bout I show yall where it is" so I had a police escort to the place. All in all I was very surprised how pleasant folks were, to a yankee like me, and being born and raised in the Philly area, I really don't know what part of Philly the "Brotherly Love" comes in, but it's certainly not on the highways.
That said, I think PA has some of the best laws regarding guns and traffic. As we know there are lots of states who infringe on our constitutional rights as far as gun laws go, PA is pretty fair I believe. As for traffic I can't think of another state that only the State Police can use radar in, and when doing so, pretty much have to be out in the open. The local police have to use a timing device, vascar, stop watch, etc. State police using radar must give you a 5 mph cushion over the limit, local police using other means must give 10 mph, however a trooper following you in his car only need give 1 mph. I've been to traffic court in NJ where folks were there for doing 28 in a 25, plus NJ doesn't write the fines on the ticket, you must appear in court. As a professional driver and a gun owner these two things stick out in my mind as PA friendly.

Re: Poll:Is PA the friendliest state????
I vote maybe. It really depends where you live. Pa is a strange state. You can be in the inner city and be in the country in a couple hours or less. The further out you go the friendlier people are.

Re: Poll: Is PA the friendliest state????
I think it depends on what part of the state. The rural areas are more friendly IMHO. Vermont is one of the friendliest places I've been but the people in North Dakota are very nice too. I don't recall meeting anyone that wouldn't help you out if you needed it. Met a lot of good farmers who not only allowed me to hunt on their land but many times invited me to participate in duck and goose hunts in their blinds.

PA is definitely one of the best in the area, but anyone who says it is the friendliest has never been down south
