l need to read more history
While perusing the internet reading up on the militia I came across something interesting. From Wlkipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit..._v._Cruikshank
Federal troops were withdrawn from the South in 1877, and elections afterward were often fraught with fraud and violence as white Democrats struggled to suppress black Republican voting. From 1890 to 1908, the southern states passed new constitutions or amendments that resulted in disfranchisement of most black people and many poor whites, to prevent the type of Populist coalition that had gained temporary power in the 1880s. This status of political exclusion lasted until after passage of federal civil rights legislation in the 1960s.
When did the Democrats become the voice of Black people and why did they leave the Republicans? We all know how that worked out. They were sold back into slavery. Only this time they were owned by their Democrat masters and beholden to the government cheque.
So if Trump pulls this out will he truly reach out to Black America and try to show them a better way? One based on innovation and self reliance, not handouts.
There was also this nice little tidbit as well:
The Justices ruled that the Second Amendment only restricts the power of the national government in taking away rights and that the right to "keep and bear arms for a lawful purpose" exists apart from the Constitution, not because of it, stating "This is not a right granted by the Constitution. Neither is it in any manner dependent upon that instrument for its existence".

Re: l need to read more history
To answer your first question, when did Blacks start to "prefer" the Democrats, many political observers believe that came about during the "Great Depression" of the 1930s, when many blacks made the conscious choice of being able to eat by taking advantage of the gov't "welfare" programs and work programs (WPA, CCC etc.). As it happens the Civil Rights Act would have NEVER passed without the votes of the Republicans that pushed it forward. Likewise it was a Republican President that sent Federal troops to force integration in some areas of the South (Little Rock 1957) .
As to the last little bit regarding the BoR restricting "only" the Federal Government...that was true only until several SCOTUS decisions during the early to mid 20th Century started the concept of "Incorporation" and applying the BoR to State and local governments also.

Thanks for that. As I continued to read the article it mentioned that but you phrased it so much better than the long wordy Wiki article.
