It only covers shootings after they are determined to be self-defense. It will reimburse you for what you spent on getting an acquittal, but it only pays AFTER you've come up with the money, gone through trial, and been acquitted. It would be more useful if it provided funds to get that acquittal, since hiring defense counsel on a limited budget can result in a bad outcome.

    Thank you for your reply.

So in your humble option, is this better than nothing, or a waste of money? Are their other options?

It's not worthless, but it's not worth much. Most people will never be involved in a defensive shooting; of the small group that are, many will not be tried. The ones who are tried will have to come up with all the money up front, in cash (defense attorneys who want to avoid bankruptcy don't extend credit to their clients). Then, IF they are acquitted, they get that money back.

I wouldn't pay more than $50 per year for it. If they provided counsel up front for every person involved in a shooting, then it would be worth more, assuming that the counsel provided wouldn't be inexperienced patent attorneys.

well first off some things you can do now....

    1. own nothing in your name other than the clothes on your back. Either work with a lawyer to have all you assets put into a trust or make certain any assets have leins or other encumberances on them.

    2. Thru these boards find an attorney and put him on speed dial.

    3. Load your brass with 2 pairs of latex gloves.

    4. Get a cell phone from a thrift store and confirm it can dial 911 and use that to summon an ambulance for the person that attempted to murder you or your family. Throw the cell phone away at a location far far away from where this incident happened.

    5. Start saving now for a retainer for an attorney.

    6. Contact your insurance agent and see if they offer an umbrella or excess liabilty insurance plan and see if that plan covers shooting situations,,, buy THAT protection if it does.

    7. Get to your attorney as fast as possible and let him or her guide your next actions. DO NOT TALK TO THE POLICE WITHOUT A LAWYER!!!!

    good luck and stay low
    gotta love her ;)

Makes a lot of sense. If I were to pay for insurance I would want it to kick in to pay up to the limit before hand rather than afterward. Rep sent to ya gunlawyer...
