    Default .22 short rifles

When I was a kid we used to use .22 short hp for squirrel and rabbit hunting and never found them lacking for power. At the time Remington made rifles chambered for .22 short only with a slower twist bbl which was supposed to be more accurate, my question is do any of you have one of these rifles and does it really shoot shorts more accuratly than ones chambered for S,L,and LR. back then shorts cost 1/2 as much as LR but now they cost more. I have never had a rifle chambered for shorts only.

Me either. I have a Remington Model 552 Speedmaster that I bought in the early 70's that shoots .22 shorts, Long and LR. Back then I shot all shorts 'cause they were cheaper to shoot on a school boy's budget. Whacked many a "head-shot" groundhog with it. Those were the days.=)

My dog "Ruger" is worried about the economy because Alpo is up to $3.00 a can. That's almost $21.00 in dog money.

I have a Remington model 24 in .22 Short only. It is a semi-auto. Rifle was made in 1928. Shoots great. I have not noticed a difference in accuracy of the short. I only use the rifle for plinking.

I was wondering if the slower twist rifling really made ant noticible difference. The ones I saw advertized when still made were bolts, and a few Winchester pump gallery guns like you used to see a shooting galleries on the board walk in Atlantic City long ago.

Back in the 70s I used cb-longs to hunt squirrls and they were pretty good and out of a 22in bbl almost silent, the bullet hitting made as much noise as the gun. In hand guns they are too loud.

In the 50s and 60s I used the cbs by Noble-Dynimet, the ones about 1/2 as long as a short and a copper case, they were even quiter but less effective.
