308 Saiga w/21.75" Barrel For Long Range
Hi group,
I was looking at a Russian Made .308 Saiga with a 21 3/4" Barrell for some long range shooting. (I have property in Tx) I know most Model 700's that are used for this have 22" barrels and most Military rifles as well. And I've read proper 308s can go out to 800-900 yards with ALOT of work on the users part and hit what they want to.
This .308 holds 8 rounds in a Clip vs. being a bolt-action though. Which could be good for follow up rounds. Its around $450 new. Also can you hunt in PA with a .308 ?
Opinions? Does anyone here have one of these.Al Zeller

you can hunt with a .308 in PA, but you can't hunt with a semi auto rifle.

Re: 308 Saiga w/21.75" Barrel For Long Range
Opinions? Hell this is the internet, it's full of opinions.
If you're looking for something that shoots out to 800-900 yards, I would suggest something other than the saiga.
Maybe pick up the Rem 700 and start there. I've heard that Savage makes a decent long range .308 out of the box as well.
Just my opinion. Good luck with your purchase.

Re: 308 Saiga w/21.75" Barrel For Long Range
I prefer the Semi-Auto vs. bolt-action. I figure if an AR-10 is good for our boys and shoots pretty far with .308 and semi-auto, this configuration/combo should work.
Opinions on that?
What is the normal range for an AR-10 in .308 ?
Thanks.Al Zeller

A .308 is pretty much a .308 - regardless of what kind of gun it is. As for putting lead on target at range - that's where different guns will make the biggest difference.
What are you shooting at, and what's the range you're shooting it from? That will give us a better idea of what you are trying to accomplish - and a better idea where to point you.Soap Box - Worn out : Ballot Box - Broken : Jury Box - Pending : Ammunition Box - Unknown

Re: 308 Saiga w/21.75" Barrel For Long Range
I figure a maximum of 350-400 yards at target at 24 inches H x 15-18 inches W.
Most shooting will be done at approx. 100-250 yards.
I read somewhere online the max. effective range for an AR-10 is about 550 yards or so.
Anybody here use the Bushnell Laser Boresight kit on here. Some reviews I read online were positive on that?
Like you said a 308 is a 308 and zips along pretty straight for a sec. which is all you really need. The coyote, deer, or whatever don't care when the shot 'tags' it.Al Zeller

Re: 308 Saiga w/21.75" Barrel For Long Range
Just because barrel is long and same length as Rem 700, does not mean its gonna shoot the same.
Its like someone telling you that Caprice and Corvette both have 350, there for Caprice should run 13 in 1/4miles and tops out at 175mph, because Corvette does. Which is not true.
there are alot of other factors that makes gun accurate. not to mention you'll need to consider wind, compensate bullit drop and everything else.
SR10 are built from ground up as long range sniper gun. Where as Saiga isn't.
If you want long range shooter(400~800yrds), I would ditch the saiga and get something else.
Springfield's National Match M1A in .308 would be better choice for long range .308 Semiauto. But you ain't gonna find those for $450
I think like above poster said, i think your much better off get Rem 700, and starts from 100yrds, then work your way up. Because you not gonna hit anything at long range if you can't master 100yrdsAudemus jura nostra defendere

Re: 308 Saiga w/21.75" Barrel For Long Range
You may be right on the Rem. 700. But the main question is 'good laser boresighters'.
We got on to 'rifles' vs. the TOPIC.
Is there any good (not to expensive) Boresite systems that in 'low light' will shine up to say 250 yards and be able to be seen thru a SCOPE on the rifle?Al Zeller

Re: 308 Saiga w/21.75" Barrel For Long Range
walmart sells one that you stick it in the muzzle for like $30. I'm not sure how good or how visible its laser at 200yds. I presume with good scope and dimmed light condition, You can spot it at 200yrds.
Remenber, laser bore sight will project dead streight light. And bullit will drop some at any distance.Audemus jura nostra defendere

The Saiga .308 is a good buy but don't figure on better than 3 MOA.
